Helpers old and new
Every year The Glanfield Group welcomes new helpers, and welcomes back those with previous experience. This combination of new and experienced helpers means that key skills are retained within the Group, but we're also open to new people and ideas.
Normally the group numbers about 75, with some 40 helpers caring for some 20 children and young adults.
We welcome anyone as a helper who is enthusiastic and good with children. Medical professionals (nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, etc.) are especially welcomed to join our team.
Preparation
Anyone wishing to join the Glanfield Group must have a personal recommendation supported by two written references. Prior to the pilgrimage all helpers are expected to attend preparation days, during which we get to know each other and develop key skills. All helpers are also required to complete a check by the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS). We maintain high standards in matters of safeguarding, personal care (including the administration of medication and moving and handling skills), and risk assessment.
The costs
Most of the helpers pay their own expenses (approximately £875 in 2019), with a small proportion of those receiving a subsidy according to their means. The majority of the finance we raise therefore goes towards subsidies for the children and their families, and paying for the activities of the holiday.
Much of this money comes from fundraising efforts by helpers, past and present, but donations from other sources are always needed as the cost of the holiday is substantial.
